WELDING is the process of joining together two pieces of metal by melting them with the use of either fire or electricity. Whoever said that learning how to weld will be fun and easy wasn’t in the right mind. You will also be exposing yourself to heat, ultraviolet rays and radiation, and you will also most probably be staying still on a single position for extended periods of time. This could cause back sores, neck sores, and a lot more. That’s why before you get into welding, you should first make sure that you are comfortable. This includes the safety gears that you will be using. The helmet you choose, whether it’s a passive or an automatic darkening helmet depending on your choice, should not be too heavy. You see, if it’s too heavy, you will feel that it’s weight will double because your muscles are already a bit worn out trying to support the weight. As time passes by, your neck and upper back muscles will start to sore and ache. This could affect the quality of your work. Also the gloves that you will be choosing – the process of choosing should be based on what time of metal you will be welding – should be the perfect fit. Don’t rush when welding, okay? Keep a constant speed that is not too slow and not too fast at the same time. If you notice that there are now gaps on your weld. Of course, you can not just abandon these gaps and just go on ignoring them. You have to do something that will fill them in, and make them disappear. The gaps may be large or small, but whatever the size is, you will fill them in. So what do you do? There may be times where you will have to break between two sections of metal. However, if you can’t find a suitable piece of metal to use to use as a patch, you may have to fill the gap with a weld.

Don’t get discouraged though! It is actually much easier to fill in gaps with a weld than when you compare it to trying to look for a suitable piece of metal. You will be using the logic you have acquired during your welding experience. If for example the gap is about six inches long. So in your hands, you hold two pieces of similar metal.  What you will want to do is to fill this gap with the use of the material you want to burn in on each piece of metal as you lay in the filler. You will do some kind of stitching to it with the use of a small puddle that will form. You can choose between using the horse shoe motion or a circular motion type.  Most experienced welders recommend the horseshoe motion though since it is able to build up more metal along the side walls, which can effectively close the gap with each new pass of your “horseshoe” weld.

You have to cover up the gap in a way that it doesn’t look like it’s obviously just covered. It should also be able to blend in with what the original looks like. If the piece of metal you are hold is a bit thicker, and you have a feeling that it will bulge out, you can start the weld at a upper portion, let the heat build up first, and watch as a puddle forms. The puddle will flow down to the gap, then if it seems okay, quickly move away. You don’t want to expose the metal to too much heat and create another gap or hole that you have to cover again. You have to take breaks between filling the gaps. The longer break the better, since that also means a longer cooling time for the material.

I admit that the end product of this filling in the gap may not be pretty to look at, since there’s not a blemish but you can choose to use a hand-held grinder that can shape your weld and clean-up the metal nicely. You should expect that your finished product will be smooth and seamless.

 

Don’t worry if you can’t get it right on the first few tries! No one is an expert at anything at the beginning! You will just have to keep on practicing and studying about welding. The Best Way To Put Ripples In Your Weld

In a way, I think welding can be considered as an art. According to Merriam-Webster’s dictionary, ART is defined as “something that is created with imagination and skill and that is beautiful or that expresses important ideas or feelings“. Maybe welds can be considered as sculptures. It is also said here that another meaning to it would be: the “skill acquired by experience, study, or observation“. For example, in a sentence we can use this as “… the art of welding.”

Learning how to weld is not just a simple walk in the park. You will need to study and be supervised during the first few months or weeks, but you will know what to do as time goes by. First, you will need to gather the materials you need. This includes the safety gears that you will be using and the metal you are going to weld together. Be sure that you have a comfortable helmet that will be able to efficiently shield your eyes from the intense brightness, respiratory filter to protect your lungs from the poisonous fumes that could be produced by the heats reaction to the metal, and sturdy protection to protect your face, hair and upper neck from stray sparks that can cause burns on your skin. You will also need gloves. The materials from which the gloves are made should be based on the type of welding you are going to do, but if you do general welding, I think a pair of leather gloves will do just fine. Sleeves or jacket to protect your upper extremities. Remember to choose materials which aren’t flammable. Keep away from synthetic products because these have been proven to melt easily, and might possibly stick to your skin causing more harm than good. You will also need a good pair of boots – many prefer toe-steeled boots, just in case a little extra protection is needed. In choosing all these items, it is important to keep this important word in mind: COMFORT. You should feel comfortable wearing the safety gears you have chosen. Ripples in welding pretty much look like the ripples you see in a calm undisturbed body of water, when it is disturbed. In this case, it’s not in the body of water that you see the ripples but in “a body of molten metal”. The main influencers in the making of the ripples are most likely the electrode, amperage, and the voltage. I believe that the so called ripples in your welding trail will be the one to tell if it’s too hot, and if you are moving too slow. If it’s neat and not dripping too much, you did the weld correctly. The heat you provided wasn’t excessive and wasted. If it is too drippy, loose, and still a little bit wet, you may have been moving too slow. You will notice that the ripples are a little bit pointy, the weld is cooling too slowly because of the excessive heat. This is referred to as a BURN THROUGH, and if this happens, I’m sorry but it’s kind of hard to repair. You may just want to replace that part.

What to do when the ripples aren’t the correct appearance?

It’s easy! All you will have to do would be to reach out and adjust the cause of the overheating. You may want to turn down the amperage. You could also go for choosing to use a much smaller arc, or move at a faster rate, or you could find that they call the “CHILL PLATE”.   A chill plate would be a large piece of metal that is used for absorb the excessive heat. Best Way To Carry A Welding Puddle in a Flat Position

If you are a welder or trying to learn how to weld, I’m sure you are aware by now that when joining two metal pieces together you will have to make a weld pool and you will use this like a glue to stick the pieces together. Of course, if you are looking for the best way to carry a welding puddle in a flat position – that would be slowly.

 

There are several way that you can run a weld bead along a joint. Sometimes, though, welders have a hard time doing this because of the awkward positions that they have to do. You may have to weld from a narrow space, under the car, under water, and a lot more positions that is required in your job. We also have gravity who plays a big role when it comes to molten metal that gets deposited  between metal plates or pipe sections. For example, if you are welding overhead, you have to keep in mind that speed is important. You will have to move faster than normal, because if you are slow the weld metal may end up dripping on your face shield rather than connecting the two joints. You have to consider the appropriate joint that you will be using, and the right machine. Let’s also not forget that you have to have the right hand position, stroke, and speed in order to be able to get the bead down properly.
Here are some common bead types that are used in shop or in field:

  • STRINGER BEADS

    When you say, “Stringer Beads” this usually refers to a straight forward bead wherein you have a choice whether you want to drag (pull) or push the torch across the joint with minimal side to side movement. If you choose to drag, it is simply when the electrode is pointed back towards the puddle, and you leading it. After the work is done, you would notice that the penetration is maximum and it looks like a robust-looking weld.

    If you are dealing with heat sensitive or thin metals, or even just welding in a vertical up position, welders must keep in mind that you have to “push” the torch. You have to point the electrode forward. You see, when you are welding in a vertical up position, because of the effects of gravity, the molted metal will want nothing more but to fall downward so a way to counter this would be to direct the heat away from the puddle and allow the weld to solidity quickly so that it will have no time to drip.

    Stringer beads can be used in any welding position because they are generally not very wide.If you are moving in a straight line, it is important that you make sure that you will get to tie in with the toe of the weld on either side. Keep in mind that the object that you are welding is not just to fill a joint with a new metal. You have to create a fusion between the weld and base metal. If you move the torch along in a slow motion, the weld puddle could flow over to both sides of the joint.

  • WEAVE BEADS

    If you have to weld a wider one, you can try to weave it from side to side along a joint. If it is a fat joint, the process of weaving is the quickest way to get the job done. This is also true in the case of groove welds on thick stock. On fillet welds, weavers are also common.

    There are different types of weaves, and each welder can choose which one they would like to do. They can choose between doing a zigzag type, a crescent type, or a curlycue technique.

    Weaving is also useful when you want to control heat in a weld puddle. Remember to pause on each side of the weld in order to achieve a good tie in and prevent an undercutting on the edges. Just like the first one, speed is also an important factor in weaver especially if you are moving across the center of the joint. If your speed is too slow, you may end up with what they call as a “high crown”, this usually looks like a bulge in the middle. A flat of a slightly convex weld face looks much better.

    If you are interested in doing a triangle weave, it is useful when you need to fill a steep pocket. If you are vertical up welding again, this triangle weave will allow you to build some kind of shelf behind the puddle, and this stops the molten metal from sliding forward.

    If you want to stop the puddle from overheating, or expanding some more, you can try the semi-circle weave, with the center point or your stroke crossing the front of the puddle —- just a little bit ahead of it though. However if you want more heat, you can still use the semi-circle technique but you do it at the back through the puddle.

  • WHIP MOTION

    Next we have the whip motion, this is common on open groove welds, wherein the welder performs this motion with his or her wrist on the root pass. The main goal when you do this is to fuse the work plates together at the bottom with a flat bead of a weld metal. The welder will have to drive the electrode up through and along the gap, which is essential when you are trying to achieve a complete penetration. You may see a keyhole appear at the opening of the head of the puddle.

    Whip motion is a difficult stroke. The control of heat is very crucial. You do not want to expand the key hole beyond control because when it gets too big, it would be impossible for you to weld the sides together. You will have to whip the rod a little upward and ahead of the weld. This enables it to cool down and keep the keyhole at the same size.

Best Anti Spatter For Welding

Before we go on and discuss how to prevent spatters when it comes to welding, it would be best if we know what a spatter really is and how it happens. So according to Merriam-Webster, when we say spatter, we refer to the drops of liquid that seems to have been thrown forcefully in different directions. It’s messy and it somehow blemishes the beauty of your finished product. I don’t think this will be concealable with paint. Weld spatter mostly occurs in GAS METAL ARC WELDING or most commonly referred to as  MIG welding. These spatters have been generated near or at the welding arc.  Spatters does not only cause aesthetics problems but it also (1) hard to remove and quite annoying when it sticks to work pieces or even your tools, (2) it is a risk to the welder because if it lands on your skin or clothing, it could cause burning, (3) loss of your material from the arc and weld, and finally (4) it’s very hard to clean up. I understand that you want to rid yourself of spatters. Yes, that’s what you are here for. To find a solution, we must first find out where exactly it comes from and what causes spatters.

There are several factors that are able to cause spatters, however, among these, the main factor would be the disturbance in the molten weld pool during the process of transferring the wire into the weld. Experts say that this is due to the relationship between amperage and voltage. You should check if the voltage is too low or if the amperage you are using is too high for the materials and the gas combination.

Another factor would be because of the gas you selected to use. If you are going to do MIG welding, the first choice you would go for would be CO2 because this gas is able to increase the arc energy, plus it is will save you a lot of money being less expensive than the rest. Sadly though, using CO2 has been found out to cause a lot of spatter. The gas Argon has been suggested to counter balance the spatter caused by CO2.

Other factors would be:

  • The weld droplet may come in contact with the weld pool and scatter the base metal before the fusion has began in a short arc process.
  • Arc Explosion” caused by a excess amperage, causing the weld bead to heat up.
  • Arc Repulsion” refers to the force that causes the weld bead to break off and scatter.
  • If the weld bead breaks off and falls into the molten pool, which is a very common occurrence in globular transfer mode.
  • Poor quality welding wire
  • Incorrect gas mixtures may also cause spatters. It is important that you do your research before you decide to use two gases together. As I said above, Argon is quite good for CO2.
  • Improper torch angle
  • Wire stick-out length
  • Loss of shielding gas
  • If there is moisture in the atmosphere
  • Grounding location.

The ones I’ve mentioned above starting with poor quality welding wire can cause a disruption of balance in the amperage and voltage, which as I said above is the main cause of spatters. You have to prevent this from happening. No worries though, there are a lot of ways for you to reduce spatters. It may be hard to get rid of them completely though, but you can reduce them.

The first thing you should do is to properly set your MIG welder.  Be ready to make the necessary adjustments. The important thing here to remember is that even if we cannot completely get rid of the spatter, our goal would be to simply keep the spatter form sticking to the surface of the work metal so it will not ruin your finished product. Plus, hopefully you won’t be having a hard time cleaning it up.

If you have set your MIG welder, then you sr”hould test it out on a “tester” metal and examine the changes. Are you okay with that amount of spatter? If you aren’t okay with the amount of spatter, you can adjust the wire speed, or increase the voltage – just a little bit.  Not too much.

Then do a test again, until you are satisfied. Keep trying. You may not get it right the first time.

But of course, there are available products in the market that can also help you if you still aren’t satisfied after all the adjustments you just made. You still have to make the adjustments, okay? Don’t rely on these products. There are actually anti-spatter sprays you can buy. It is sold in different types.

  1. AEROSOL SPRAYS are a great choice! They have been proven themselves to be effect and also cost friendly at the same time. All you will need to do is spray a little bit over the area, and it will prevent most of the spatter from sticking to the surface. Due to this, you can easily wipe the area with a cloth or with the use of a wire brush.

    However, aerosol sprays give off fumes so you better put on your respirator.

  2. COOKING OIL. Some welders prefer to use cooking oil that has been dissolved in water. I don’t know how they dissolved it cause whenever I try, the oil doesn’t dissolve fully. They then pressurize this mixture in a can. Cooking oil is good since it doesn’t produce as much fumes compared to aerosol sprays. Plus it is cheaper than aerosol sprays.
  3. WATER SOLUBLE. You can mix water and something that is sprayed on plants. But these aren’t really that effective, and it could potentially cause problems in the long run.

 

Don’t forget that the angle of how you hold the torch also matters in the prevention of too much spatter. You just have to practice because “Practice makes perfect”!
