Weld Spatter And How To Prevent It

Let’s get this straight: Weld spatter will never disappear but there are certain ways on how you can prevent it, or maybe a better term for this would be – reduce it. If you aren’t entirely sure what a “SPATTER” is, here’s a picture of it:

Welding spatters are formed from what is left of the wire electrode. These are the parts that did not fuse very well into the weld puddle. How will these spatters affect your work? And that’s what spatters do – they destroy or lower the appearance or beauty of your work. It will seem like the quality of your work has been ruined. Did you know that sometimes just the setting of your MIG gun can affect the amount of spatters? Now you know! The first technique is to check and properly set your MIG welder. Adjust it’s settings. There is no specific settings – it all depends on your gut and welding torch. That is precisely why you will also need to perform a test weld before you go and use it on your real material. Don’t worry, just a short stitch pattern will do. It doesn’t have to be complicated. You will just have to see if the spatters have been reduced or did it increase. Once you are satisfied with the amount of spatter, then you can begin welding on your real material. You may or you may not get the correct settings immediately but try and try until you do. Examine the area around the weld joint to appearance of excessive spatter. You can try turning down the wire speed, I believe, and then perform another weld test. Don’t take the weld test for granted. Keep adjusting that wire speed down if you aren’t satisfied with it. Remember, that you should still be able to produce a solid weld, okay?
