Why Is The Quality Of The Weld Important

If you are a novice in welding, you may not understand yet the importance of presentation and quality of your finished product. Most of you would probably be thinking about just getting the job done as quickly as you possibly can. It is also equally important that you – at an early stage – be able to instill good habits in making sturdy products that will wow the client. If you have been welding for years now, you probably understand the importance of maintaining the quality of your finished products. Giving your clients the best that you can not only makes them want to hire you again, but it also cultivates trust in the client-worker relationship. I understand that welding is no easy task, and there will be some days where you will want nothing more but to kick back your shoes and relax on the couch with the remote control on your left hand, while a bottle of beer on the right. And during days like this, you may try to finish your work as fast as you can so you could rest.

I completely understand that welding is a tiring task, dangerous, and learning how to weld is not a mere walk in the park. If you are a highly experienced welder, you must train the newbies to develop good welding habits. The ideal effect of this would be to help in ensuring that these newbies are always prepared to create quality welds, and as a result will be able to add positive vibes to the overall welding operation. Of course, newbies in the field will also benefit much from this! They will be able to gain confidence and the skills they require in order to become a much more experienced welder. This could me a higher position opening the doors to a higher salary, and a flood of job offers!

You see, there are ways now wherein the quality of the weld can be assured and this process is referred to as the “Weld Quality Assurance”. This process makes use of technological methods and actions that test or assure the quality of welds, and it also confirms the location, presence, and coverage of welds. You can test finished products with the use of Imaging methods, such as X-Rays, visible light imaging, Ultrasonic and acoustic-based methods, and peel testing of spot welds. Did you know that there are also some ways where the quality of your weld can be monitored? And this happens during the process of welding. This is mostly applied to automated monitoring for weld-quality purposes and secondarily for process-control. The goal of this is to make sure that the products are of quality, durable, and safe.

Novices should keep in mind though that even if quality is important, their SAFETY is most important. Welders should be equipped with the materials they need to protect themselves from any possible hazards that they might encounter. We always say this, but I’ll repeat it again – If a welder is comfortable in the safety gears he or she is wearing, it could greatly improve the quality of his or her weld. The American Welding Society (AWS) and the OSHA have guidelines that the PPE ( Personal Protective Equipment) manufacturer should follow at all times.

As the owner or the senior welder, you should also make sure that there is enough ventilation or air flow in the welding area. You see, when you weld some materials, they emit dangerous or poisonous fumes that could be damaging to your welder’s health. Teach them the proper technique on how to keep their heads out of the fumes. Provide them with helmets that have respiratory filters.

The next thing you should focus on would be the extra yet important materials needed. Since we are mostly using electricity to weld now, you should put importance in providing strong electrical power and good conduction to your welding areas. Make sure that everything is secure and no tube is leaking.

Of course, to produce great welding quality, the environment where the welding is happening should also be taken into perspective. You should clean the base material before you begin your welding or also during if you feel that it needs to be cleaned. You wouldn’t want dirt, oil, or grease to mess up with your final product. They could lead to contamination and ultimately, give you a poor welding quality, and a costly rework. Not only that, your credibility with your costumers will also be affected.

Be sure to read the instructions or know the right sequence of the procedure before you begin your work. These instructions will ensure that the recommended parameters are met. You will mostly see here the required shielding gas mixture, voltage and amperage ranges, and a lot more. You have to keep these instructions in mind as you do your welding. They weren’t placed there for no reason.

Study the materials that you will be welding beforehand. Each material reacts a bit differently when they are exposed to electricity or heat. And don’t forget to inspect the welds. Inspection using the naked eyes is also the quickest and cheapest method of ensuring that the material is clean and intact. Newbies should be taught about how to quickly identify defects in the product or a problem in the weld. In case a problem arises, the welder should be knowledgeable about what the proper thing to do in the situation would be. This will be able to contribute a lot to a quality weld. Welders should learn how to adjust to a situation.


Whoever said that the thing needed in achieving a high quality product is from using expensive materials alone is clearly blinded. If you do not learn how to properly handle these expensive materials then  it could turn into nothing, and will just give you a bigger debit to deal with.
