Best Welding Angle for overhead welding

Being a master at welding is not a simple walk in the park, but don’t make the work harder for yourself by failing to know the best angle or position for overhead welding. Other factors that make welding hard aside from the heat and health risks is that there are some cases in which you have to weld in a undesirable or uncomfortable position. Overhead welding is a bit harder than the others because you will be straining your neck and the sparks will most likely fall to your face.

 

This is a reason why you should get the best safety gear everytime you are welding. The first thing must do is to dress appropriately for the task. Do you have your safety helmet? Your gloves and your jacket or overalls? Are you certain that you are protected from sparks or metal pieces that could hit your face or skin?  Next is you should check your environment. Are there any hazards around you? Any dangerous puddles of water? Clean them up and make sure that your welding area is safe for use. Also before you begin, be sure to check the wirings if there are kinks or openings that could lead to a disaHster.

 

Be sure that you also have enrgency equipment within reach. What emergency equipment am I talking about? A fire extinguisher to get rid of those pesky small fires, medicine for burns or inhalers. You can also stock up on bandages and wound ointments.

 

Now that you think you are ready, it’s time that you learn the best position when you have to weld something over your head. So take your welding rod and torch and position them at a 90 degree position but over your head. The flame should be directed on the opening so that you can quickly melt both edges of the joint. You should be able to gather sufficient filler metal in order to maintain an adequate puddle that comes with enough reinforcement. The welding flame should be able to support the molten metal. Be sure it distribute it along one joint. For this task, only a small puddle is required so this will be the right time for you to use the rod. Take note of your heat control.

 

You will perform overhead welding from the underside of a joint. The metal you are supposed to weld will sag or drop on the plate… This will cause the bead to have what welders call a high crown. That’s why, as I said above, the molten puddle should be kept at a small amount only. If your puddle becomes too large, remove the flame immediately to allow the weld metal to harden or freeze. However if you are welding light sheets, be sure to apply the heat equally to the base metal and filler rod.

 

Nobody will be able to get the hang of it immediately, but that’s the reason why you will have to practice the angle or position for overhead welding to be able to become the best. But it is also important that you are comfortable in ypur welding position, so don’t push it if you just aren’t. Find a position that you are most comfortable in because comfort during work is important. Just make sure that you are safe from harm.
